Early calls and opening grain markets

Check out the best morning wire in the grain business on the website of Country Hedging, the brokerage arm of CHS Cooperatives (see “Morning Wire for Today” under Market Commentary). Their headquarters are located about 5 minutes east of my home in suburban St. Paul, but I am not a customer of Country Hedging and they aren’t paying for endorsements. I simply like what they do in their morning wire.

I find it ironic in our 24/7 connected age of interent, iphones and email that it is difficult to find a good morning recap of items important to the grain markets. I blame it on the eCBOT market, which has transformed the reporters task of discovering the tone of the markets each morning into a simple regurgitation of what happened the night before in the electronic markets.

Country Hedging’s one-page morning wire keeps it simple with 3 or 4 bullet points under four different headings; Highlights, Corn, Soybeans and Wheat. Grain comments are followed by an early market call. They will note the latest figures from a USDA report, important weather developments, and other news items. The “Morning Wire for Today” offers very little analysis, but this one minute read keeps you up-to-date with the most important headlines in the world of grain.
